Traditional allopathic medicine views the body as a biological machine, consisting of various mechanical systems. From this perspective the cause of dis-ease is diagnosed by assessing symptoms and treating these. The fundamental flaw in this approach is that body parts do not work in isolation.

Naturopathic medicine, takes a more holistic view of how all the systems interact and affect each other; these systems being: the energy system, the biological system and the psychological system. From this perspective dis-ease is caused by imbalance within the systems. It is thought that physiological illness is the result of disruption in the energy field of the body, caused by emotional disturbance, trauma or even spiritual challenges which have not been resolved. Rather than seeing the physical disturbance as the starting point of ill health, Energy Medicine suggests that emotional state and the nature of one’s mind-set has an effect on the process of healing. This is not as far-fetched as it might first appear; the role of placebo in drug trials is well known.

After all whether treated allopathically or naturopathically, it is our body that performs the healing. Medical research is now giving more attention to the opposite of the placebo effect – the nocebo effect. Simply put negative beliefs, low expectations and a lack of trust in one’s healthcare professional have been found to have a detrimental effect on the healing process.

Energy Medicine facilitates healing by working with the energy system of the body. Like Naturopathic medicine this approach treats imbalance in the energy field which has begun to manifest as disruption of the emotional and/or physical body. Within this model of health, it is thought that dis-ease occurs when the ‘life energy’ is not flowing freely through the body. Many Eastern healing traditions practice this energy balancing approach to health, such as acupuncture, reflexology, Tai Chi and Qigong.

During the past 15 years, there have been a number of significant studies that confirm the positive benefits of energetic healing (for mental health as well as physical health). Bioelectromagnetic research has theorised about the possible mechanisms by which energetic healing occurs. It is suggested that Energy Medicine utilises the body’s own ultra-weak nonionizing electromagnetic fields, which in turn stimulate the healing response.

Healing happens on three levels; emotional, mental and physiological. Energy Medicine calms the mind, relaxes the nervous system and stimulates the biological healing mechanism of the body. Studies have shown significant results in the treatment of anxiety, depression, PTSD and ASD.

It is recommended that Energy Medicine is used as a supportive adjunct to other interventions. A treatment will last approximately 1 hour. The patient can sit in a chair or lie on the couch (fully clothed). The practitioner’s hands are placed gently on and around the body in a safe non-intrusive manner.
